For an organization to work, you need leadership. However, leadership is often limited to people leadership and to functions such as agreeing on goals, motivation and monitoring. We do not contest this aspect of leadership. Yet it remains a limitation. The captain of a ship knows it is not enough to have a highly motivated and competent crew at sea. In order to reach the right port at the right time without sinking, you need to manage systems and read instruments competently as well.

Leadership from a holistic perspective thus includes the development and management of social and technical systems. Good leaders develop systems such as goal achievement systems, strategy systems, the definition of business activities and organizational structures, processes, incentive models etc. It is only then that they attempt to gain commitment and enthusiasm for shared objectives, and to be role models themselves.

Leadership as the management of an organization thus concentrates on achieving superior business results with greater workplace satisfaction and performance drive. It is both management of the system of an organization as well as leading people.
